What does a grating noise sound like? Never heard the term grating when describing an automotive noise.

It sounds like runing a credit card or drivers license over corduroy pants. Cards in the spokes of a bike.

Hmm.....when it wont shift into gear, will it not go in to any gear or did you not try? And does it have the occaisonal pop noise?

Does not go into any gear. I didn't try to force it. Didn't hear a pop that I recall.
