advice on gear whine
i just installed newer gears in my car from 273's to 355's and now theres a little while coming from the rear end. a certified for mechanic working on ford rear ends for over 20 years put them in and they are stock ford gears. is that whine ok? should i worry about early failure?

agreeing with adder here(gulp)..newer/stock gears = used.
they were probably worn premature, and from past experience each and ever clutch band/spacer has to be in exact order or they will whine

yes, see.. what happens is.. when the gears set in, the clearances will actually get wider. Its always recommended to set the backlash as tight as possible... .008", this way, when everything seats, you will hopefully still be within spec

I would ask him about the backlash, and how many pounds of torque he set the pinion bearing preload to. These are the things likely to make gears howl. Of course, I'm one to talk...I had gears put in almost a year ago, and mine howl too--even with perfect backlash, all new bearings, and proper bearing preload. Go figure.
