My T-5 is about done and I have been looking at several options. First off it needs to handle 400 horse and I don't want to put out alot of dough for a tremec. I also have a question about the gearing. I was looking at the ones with the 2.95 first gear instead of my 3.35. The 2.95 means you can whine first gear out further right? Second the best price I can find was an astro performance T-5 with super alloy 2.95 gears that can handle 450 horse. It cost 850 plus you have to give them a core. My dad and I are both very mechanical inclined and have done everything except rebuild a tranny. If I were to buy just the gears do you think we could handle it? We have watched videos and read books. Thanks

I recommend doing that.
However, when I do my t5 in the 408w, I will rebuild myself. Mostly for the experience...
The gear ratios seems to be a huge factor in the strength rating of the t5. 2.95 is rated higher than 3.35 for example. I haven't seen any proof that the gear materials are different, it just seems to be the gear ratio.
Well, that is my theory anyway....

Sounds good I think I might do mine myself with help from pops. Astro sells the super alloy with 2.95 first gear the whole kit for like 400 or 450 you just have to install into yours, then you can sell your old gears that didn't grind on Ebay.

It sounds like the one Astro is selling is a Zspec, depending on the 5th gear ratio. That's a good price for one though. I wouldn't go w/ a 2.95 1st unless you have 3.55 or (numerically) higher gears. You'll be slow off the line. W/ the steeper gears it helps w/ traction and gives you a little more wind out in first instead of the instant 1-2 shift.

steeper gears only help my friend if you have the added traction as in tires and suppension...so going to a steeper gears will only enhance your traction problem
