Sorry for the confusion, but the EGR valve I am speaking about is located just above the passenger side spark plugs. There are two of them. (I think they deal with SMOG). Anyway the top unit was broken. The large nut was still on a pipe, while the round body part of the unit was attached to a vacuum line. The body part seperated from the nut. I couldnt' get the nut off the pipe and the pipe started bending. So I asked Ford to remove and put the new smog unit on.

OK, so Ford just called with the damage report. Turns out there were multiple codes showing up in the computer diagnosis. MAP sensor, and the MAF were amongst them, but the underlying problem (which cause the other codes) is no spark in the distributor. Ford states that the 'stator' and 'thick film ignition module' need replaced. THese are located inside the distributor. Is this something that I can do? Or is it tricky becuase the distributor needs to be put back together a specific way for timing issues. Ford wants $375 for parts and labor, and I guess another $68 for diagnosis, plus tax. So I am looking at aroung $500 to get it fixed.

Is this a 'common' thing to go wrong? Any ideas on what or why it happend??
if its the module you can do it yourself without removing the dist. you just need a stubby. remember when you reinstall this make sure and i mean make suer you put dielectric gease on there. if its the module on the dist. this part is only like 50 bucks. i personally would never pay that much for this fix. do it yourself and learn from it. these modules can go out at any time.

that's not called the EGR valve although it is associated with the pollution controls. it directs the flow of air from the smog pump to various places depending upon engine vacuum.
