Default i need help PLEASE

Hey guys,

I am a newb here and I need your expert advice.

I have an 89 LX 5.0. I recently replaced the spark wires and ignition wire. Turns out my ignition wire had serious cracks in it an would not start when it was wet outside. Everything was great. It started fine and ran fine. About 5 weeks ago, the voltage meter would start surging all the way up to 18 volts. The only way to stop it was to turn on all my accessories (heat on full, lights, radio) Well, about a week after that, the battery died. It has been sitting in my driveway ever since. I replaced the battery today, but the voltage meter is still surging. PLEASE HELP!!!!!!!!!! I need my car back and I don't want to go through another battery. Is this a bad cable, alternator, silenoid???????

I appreciated any insight you can give me.

Thanks

i think i will try the cables running to the alternator first. i looked again and it looks as if my negative cable is a bit worn out. i will replace that when it stops snowing. hopefully, its not the alternator. if it is, anyone now approximately how much it is and how difficult they are to replace, ( time involved)

I would check all your ground cables...a bad ground will make your gauges go crazy.

yeah, if the gauge is correct though, and it really is surging like that, my guess is that a wire is bad going to the voltage regulator on the alternator, or it is not plugged in correctly.

I went out this afternoon to replace the cables, and the brand new battery is DEAD.
What the heck is going on. I have not touched the car since saturday afternoon. What drained the battery so fast when nothing is on??????

Help Please, I need my car back.
