i saw on horsepower tv a carb gained over 100 hp on their el camino. so not only is that believable, but theres probably better out there!

50hp ...no way ..but what it does it let's you tune the carb more precise.....you can do a holley too..when looking at the top view of carb you'll see 4 lil brass things with a small hole in it under that is where you make adjustment but have to be drilled out...if you buy one you want the other plate so you have 4 corner idle control

Are you sure it was just a carb, and not an intake manifold to go along with it? 100HP for just a carb swap seems really f***ing amazing.

Sean - I've got dyno sheets to prove that a carb swap netted my Ram over 100hp.

102.5 hp and 128.3 ft-lbs @ 4200rpm to be exact.

Edelbrock Performer carbs leave a LOT to be desired.

I yanked off the Edelbrock and dropped a remanufactured Holley. Not only did I gain incredible power, but I also nearly doubled my fuel economy.
Went from 6mpg to 11+

man that is hard to believe. but I guess ya never know....the performer car is ok it's more reliable and doesn't leak..those holley always leak but are easy and cheap to rebuild and hop up.. I know with the new gasket they leak less...the performer is sorta based on a q-jet.
for that carb to give anything close to that there was a problem some where....I would assume the a/f was check on the dyno?..this can give several hp's

Yeah. They were monitoring the A/F.

Before:
max HP = 100.3, max tq = 224.7
min HP = 59.1, min tq = 64.7
Average HP = 83.6, tq = 136.8

After:
max hp = 173.1, max tq = 250.9
min hp = 119.4, min tq = 166.8
Average hp = 155.5, tq = 222.5

barometric pressure was .02 inHg higher, vapor pressure was .01 inHg lower, and ambient temp was 1.9 degrees warmer for the second run.

99% of the gain was realized with the Holley straight out of the box. They then changed the jets or whatever magic they worked and picked up a hair more. It was the second Edelbrock carb I had on it. I didn't dyno the first one, but it ran on the street equally pathetically.

This is a 1986 3/4 ton 4x4 with 3-speed auto (that was apparently burning up, it's being rebuilt as we speak), with 4.10 gears and 35x12.5 tires on 16.5x9.75" steel wheels. I don't want to guess at the drivetrain losses but I'd be willing to bet that it's in the 35-40% range, which would make the numbers look a lot more pathetic.

360 smallblock
Edelbrock performer cam and intake manifold
Hooker ceramic coated headers
single 3" flowmaster 30-series
14x4" K&N open element
No smog equipment whatsoever - air pumps removed, egr removed, no cats from the factory, charcoal canisters removed. (it was all failing anyway)
I think it needs heads in a bad way, but it does the job just fine right now.

I don't know much at all about tuning carbs, but I've been told that you can't really do much with the standard Performer carbs aside from idle mixtures.

But when you compare the out-of-the-box settings on both, and one nets you over 100hp...

The performer was a 750, which I personally felt was too much, but the mechanic swore by the thing. When I showed him the dyno results he changed his tune, saying that he told me the Edelbrock wasn't a performance carb and that I should have bought a Holley. I'm about 99% positive that he never mentioned it.

Well i am a definite believer in the proform body. It was worth 2 tenths at the track this week, and some jetting and tuning are definitely still needed. In my opinion it definitely flows more air, but you need the right components, to put that air to good use. I definitely think its worth the money. As for edelbrock carbs, around here ive never heard good things about them. And my opinion is go with the holley if you want to go fast.
