Default Thermostat question for all you guys !

alright...my 93 GT with a 331 stroker crate motor, going down the road will run like 140-150.....now if i do some stop and go driving, it will get up to 160-170...the guy i got it from said he had a 180 t-stat in there, also when i crank the car up and let it sit and warm, well actually anytime the car is running it smells real real strong of gas fumes....so i take it that it running that cool is making it run rich ( which my dumb **** had no idea it would do)....what is the best stat to get and what temp should i get for it ? i'm not even sure if it is a 180 if its running that cool....please help a rednecked honky out[sm=sigh.gif]

180 is pretty common and what I run. Are you running an aftermarket gauge? it's very uncommon to run below stat temp for any sustained period of time, I'm not sure why that would be...I've not seen it before. Basically what's happening is the car is not sensing it's at operating temp and continues to run in a rich mode...it's costing you money, milage, and performance. I would swap the stat ASAP and make sure to run a 50/50 mix.

dman...yes i do have a aftermarket gauge as well and thats the reading i go by....as far as gas money...oh my LORD it sucks the gas, and i run it on the highway between 55-65.....i do have a big 3 core aluminum radiator on it as well.....and when its at idle, whether its cold or hot...the fumes are REAL REAL strong......is there any certain kind of t-stat to get with the 331 crate stroker or is one for a stock motor ok?

All stats for the 302/331/347 are the same..I'd go with a Mr gasket 195 stat if I were you, it seems like maybe the rad has too big a cross section and for some reason is just working too well...alot of guys would love that problem. Anyhow the higher stat will likely help out the rich issue...but remember it is a stroked mustang so don't expect too much. When summer comes I'm willing to bet that larger rad will keep temps nicely in the 190's...perfect imo.

thanks man...thats what i'll pick up then...the car has a single 15" electric fan on it, but i got a dual 12' fan to go on it...the guy i got it from said that with the AC on in the summer it wants to run a little hot......so i will just hold onto the dual fans and wait till summer gets here before i worry with that....also,i'm still trying to learn the difference in the stock and stroked motors are...what the big deal with a stroked motor is...all that good stuff....i guess i'll never learn lol

Few more cubic inches and when the right parts are added and she's tuned right they make some excellent numbers. If you find the 195 too much in the summer then swap it out..small price to pay for a modded car really. dual fans will really help in the summer.

cool deal..thanks dman...so you think a 195 will do ok huh ?...also, if i drive the car without warming it up....such as get in it , crank it and go...it will backfire 1 maybe 2 times....after its warmed up it doesnt do it at all....does that sound like a running rich problem or timing problem or what to you?

sounds like a bad ECT or ACT... you should do some resistance testing on them to ensure they are functioning properly
