Default tfi moduel help

hey i was having a problem with my car surging violently when it was warm above 3000 rpms. Someone told me to disconnect the SPOUT from the tfi module "i think" and this solved the problem however i feel a loss of power. What is it that needs to be replaced to solve the issue with the spout connected?

Great to read that....the loss of power is simply because the timing is not advancing from the base initial setting......if you have it set @12° BTDC....it'll stay at 12° across the rpm range. The problem is now between the TFI module, wiring or ECM....if the TFI module is the original one, you could replace it and see how it does (another "preventive maintenance" item)....or some wiring/voltage tests would be required to isolate the real cause.

autozone, about $30, 2 screws hold it right on the front of the distributor, has a 6? wire connecter.

well the first real step would be to actually diagnose it. i'm guessing you don't have a digital volt meter or a labscope, or even a spark tester. so its gonna be difficult to diagnose. TFI modules tend to flat out die when they get warm, until they cool down. then it will start again. coils generally do what you've described, but in wierd cases it could be either. So honestly, if you feel like spending the cash and getting a TFI, even if it doesn't turn out to be the problem, at least you've got a nice new part that will last for a long time. after that, the coil is the next step, they are a tad more money. Thats also why most people tend to start with the TFI with this problem. Cheap, and usually effective.

well it just makes sense to me. i have a problem with a part, i remove the part the problem goes away, so logically i would assume the parts the problem, but i guess the factor im not adding into the equation is the part is used in conjuction with other parts.....LOL ive been doing my gf's math all day, look me....god im crazy.

Considering i dont have the tools to test what i need to test, im going to start with the tfi module for 30bucks, how much is the coil?
