Default pcv valve screen

I pulled the screen out from under the pcv valve today, God it looks like a mess!!! I Had to beat the hell out of it anyway to get it out. Now, here is my question....Do I need this? What is the purpose of it? I can buy a new one, and put that in there, it should last another 120,000 miles lol. Any feedback would be appreciated.

Sean, I know I can purchase one, I was wondering if I NEED it?? Some people have said to throw it away, but why would it be there if you do not need it? I think mine was so clogged it made my oil pan gasket fail. Not sure if that was the problem, but just curious if I should replace it, or run without it

I suppose you could run it without if you put some sort of in-line filter after the PCV.Without it and no other filter I would say you are goind to get excessive oil in your upper intake.

Ok, that seems to make sense, I think I will just go and buy a new one. This one lasted that long, I don't think I will have the car long enough for another one to clog. lol.

You should install a new screen and PCV Valve. Do you have an oil leak at the rear of the Intake Manifold? Generally when they get clogged they cause the rear intake seal to blow out.

I looked with a mirror while the car was running, and did not see anything leaking. It was all wet up on the top of the block though. I'm thinking it looked like it might have been coming out where the pcv valve goes in, that was wetttish looking also. Maybe I should change the intake gaskets while I have the motor out? I just want to get this back in the car before it gets much colder. I really did not see any oil leaking down from above, just my oil pan gasket was all blown out. Maybe it vented there instead of the rear of the intake?
