count the number of teeth on both gears, divide the ring gear number by the pinion gear number.

3.73 ring gears have 41 teeth, and the pinion has 11

41/11=3.7272727272

or he could count the rotation of his driveshaft.. which wont require tearing the cover off the diff

It would have made life easier had he said...

"I'm going to be taking the gears out of my differential. Whats the best/easiest way to figure out my gear ratio?"
