351M/400 Free... Experienced guys please help!
Hey guys,
I have seen this kind of topic, but never saw a clear resolution.
I can get a free 351m/400.
I know the bellhousing pattern is different, yes I know that means a diff. tranny, the t5 in mine now is beg. to fail anyway.
Other than that, does the weight outweigh the gain?
How much heavier is it anyway?
Does anyone have any links to info on a 351m/400 swap into a fox?
How much power can they take?
Are the motor mounts much different?
I've done a little research, and found plenty of sites with information related to the cross-compatibility of parts, so that doesn't scare me.
http://www.fordcobraengines.com/Modified%20History.htm
Scroll to the middle to see a chart of them.
I understand that you may be able to buildan insane 351w for cheaper than an insane 351m/400, but I can get this for free.
The benefit of having a separate block to tinker with while still maintaining my current setup is important, and I wouldn't mind doing something a little different.
Thanks a lot guys!

there was a 500hp build up in hot rod a month ago they were just victims of the smog era with low compression and the 2v cleveland heads ud need motor mounts and a swap bell housing to get it in there

My brother has a 351m/400 in a 79 pickup. He spun a bearing and had it completely rebuilt. The engine builder claimed 400HP, but that thing was a dog. Im sure you could proabably make it scream, but for the same amount you could probably but a W block and make it crazy!

www.ausfordparts.com www.chiheads.com for some heads ull need some flat top pistons also since compression is around 8:1 or less depending on what year it is and if its a 351m or a 400 the 400 had about 400ft lbstorque stock they have a 4inch bore with a 4 inch stroke

well i'm not a 400 ci fan for performance, finding a manual bellhousing and flywheel will cost around a couple hundred to start with the other good thing is you go automatic they did put some c4's behind them
spending just what you need to install it in your car would go a long ways into performance stuff for a 302 which is much easier to find parts for + being a lot lighter and more performance for less $$
good luck anyway

there pouches, we have a 78 Merc. Grand Maruquies with one, they are very low horse i belive around 150, and yes thats sounds low, but their not a high HP engine, there were built for torque, do and google, search for the 351m specs, and you will find some info, i personally wouldnt get it, i think a 302 would be better IMO or a 351W

well a 351m/400 is just a 460/429 335 series bellhousing...and the bell housing is a pain no more then a 460 since they share the same bell....
i have seen true 400 hp 400m in a fox..and it was a screamer///351m/400s are torq monsters anyway...
nuthin worse then guys that dog a motor in a fox,but never had exp withthem in one...
not finger pointin..

i would not suggest gettin one, I have a Ford Parts Interahcnge book that has every engine from the early 60's and up to date. They were a discontinued engine, only lasted around a deacade, did never make a wopping amount of power, look up the engine and youll see. Its a 351M-400, its not a 400 big block. Its and in between engine like the 351C was, but different then the 351C of coarse.
