Default 87 Dash Lights - Short In Wires

The wires that run down to the radio/heater for illumination are melted together because someone miswired a radio and then put in a 20 AMP fuse (should only have a 5 AMP fuse installed). I need to replace these wires but need to know where to find the connector (where they start). Does anyone have a wiring diagram and connector list and locations?

The wires were only exposed about 8 inches behind the heater controls and then disappear into a wrapped wire harness. I replaced the 8" section as they were melted...more must need replacing in the harness so I just want to bypass the bad wire and run it new. I have to disconnect it though. I suspect the wires connect either directly to the speedo lights somewhere or directly to the light switch/dimmer.

Sorry dude, if you have a multimeter or a current tester. you could mess with the wires the go in to the fuse box and see wich ones are powering.
electrical shat sucks ***.

give me a few minutes on this one. those wires, to the best of my knowledge, were "extra" so-to-say, and i dont think they will be diagramed, but give me a minute.

ok we have an Orange wire with a black stripe, that goes to the Day/Night illumination relay, which is located above and behind the heater control.
Also a Light blue wire with a red stripe, that goes to the fuse block, fuse #13, 5amps.

I'll be the Lt Blue one that's is the problem. I'll check it out. I'm betting there is more than one Lt Blue wire connecting into the fuse box at that point. I may have to cut them all to find which one is shorted. This helps though.

you know, i actually still have this problem. i've been without illumination for over a month. it really pisses me off. i took apart my whole dash and took the radio out to look for shorting wires, and i haven't found a damn thing. tomorrow i might take out the heating/ac controls and look back there. the dimmer switch on mine doesnt do anything except turn the dome light on. i'm lost...

I know that if you do not use the correct ground wire for the radio, you will not have any dash lights, this has happened to me on several fords, I am not sure the exact color of that ground wire.
