AOD 86 GT only goes in reverse.
Hey guys, my girlfriend has an 86 GT auto. It ran fine until one day it startted slipping, So I pop my head under the car real quick to see Tranny fluid gushing out. We werent far from our house so we got it back fine. Turns out one of the cooling line's fitting broke. So I replaced it. However After I did it stopped working. I filled the tranny fluid back up to normal and everything. It only moves in reverse. If I put it in any other gear the RPMs dip slightly for a second but then nothing, as if it were in nuetral. I have no Idea what the problem is. I dont want to go out and get a new tranny if I dont have to. Thanks in advance guys

if you "got it back fine", then it wouldn't be having this problem now would it?
seriously, you may have burned out the clutches and bands in the tranny due to lack of hydraulic fluid to cool them properly.
you should have left the car sit where it was and then got a ride to go get the parts to fix it and then maybe the damage would have been minimized, but I think you're going to have to at least drop the tranny pan and check the fluid filter at least to see if it is plugged up with tiny particles of things that used to be clutches and bands. sorry!

It still had fluid in it when I got it back. It leaked out afterwards. Then I fixed the leak.
But im thinking the tranny is junk. would it be easier for me to just swap the tranny? Im thinking of buying myself an 88GT auto and putting a tremec in it. SO I could use the AOD from that to put in her car. what do you think?

I think you would spend a lot less just buying a rebuilt tranny for her car! Swapping a manual in place of an auto is costly and time consuming to do, so why not buy a Stang with a manual tranny to begin with???
