Default idle problem

my 91 5.0 HO will start and run great, but once it is warmed up it idles around 1000 rpm. If i lower it it will idle fine, but when i start it it idles lower before its warmed up, so it will stall. Is this a common problem? maybe my idle air control isnt working? Also every once in a while my check engine light blinks on and off. Is there a way to get codes out of the car without having a scanner? and if so, where can i find a site that has the codes listed so i can see whats wrong?

thanks for the help
nate

go to autozone, they will scan your car for free...it might not pull a code though because our computers are OBD1

my autozone is a bunch of idiots. I was wondering if there was a way we could pull codes ourselves like mopars "3 turn" igniton trick, or a place u put a jumper wire to flash the code out on the dash.

check the vaccum lines like killer said, and also when the CEL flashes it indicates a misfire...have you tuned her up lately?

#1, Autozone is only capable of scanning OBD-II(96+) cars...
#2, Flashing CEL's indicate misfires on OBD-II cars, not ours...

there is a writeup somewhere on how to jump the STC and get the codes, hold on...

well i just rebuilt engine myself less than 500 miles ago, so i sure hope its not a missfire. might have to pull the plugs and look at em.it only seems to flash in a certain rpm range, would this be a coil problem? that is the only part idid not replace in the ignition parts during the rebuild.i do need to replace some of the original vacuum lines so that may be my problem there.

i've had a problem like this. Turned out to be a bit of carbon inside the EGR valve making the position sensor give faulty readings. remove the sensor from the egr, shave the pintle 1MM, and you'll be all set, assuming thats the code.

also, someone told me that is might be the IAC, he said although most times it just makes the idle erratic, sometimes it just makesthe car not idle right when its cold, being why i have to have my idle so high to keep it running. I unplugged it while the car was running and nothing changed, so this leads me to believe its not working, but maybe it only works when the car is cold. any thoughts?
