Default tach question

Just got my 87 gt, the tach sits at normal position when the car is off, when I start it, the tach goes backwards and stays pegged at 7000 rpms, can the tach be wired backwards, is this a sign that the tach is just no good, and lastly, are the leads for the tach on the coil, two small wires and can they be tested or reversed to see if it fixes it. Sorry for the long post.

sorry, stock tach, I plan on getting an aftermarket tach, but until that time I want to get this one working or at least figure out if it is able to be fixed.

you may need to take the instruments apart, it sounds to me like your needle is on the wrong side of the stopper...

although it is possible that your cluster is just screwed

If you find out that your cluster is bad.. it might not be a bad idea to try to find a SSP or Cobra cluster

so if the tach is bad, then the whole cluster has to be changed out, is that correct?

doesnt sound like the tach is bad to me, if the needle is moving backwards, the signal wire for the tach is being grounded out.

the two leads for the tach are on the coil right, is there a way to test that with a muti meter?
