Camshaft position sensor?

Camshaft position sensor?
A little off topic but I figured I would get more responses here than anywhere else. I have a 97 chevy k1500 5.7L. Im throwing the code (P0340) which is camshaft position sensor circuit. My question is where is the cam sensor located on this year engine.I know the 98 and up is located in the distributor, but where is it located on the 97? Or is it in the distributor too? Please let me know asap if you have any clue. Much appreciated

RE: Camshaft position sensor?
are you saying its inside the distributor? Because im looking at a picture of the sensor on acdelco's website, and there is no way this sensor could be inside the distributor

RE: Camshaft position sensor?
the 350 uses a synchronizer in place of the distributor on models with coil on plugs. If you have a distributor or even coil packs, the cam sensor will have to be the pickup coil in the distributor. Ford does the same thing. I don't ever remember the 350 getting a cam sensor in the timing cover or elsewhere. Pushrod motors with "cam sensors" nearly always have it located in the synchronizer (dummy distributor).

BUUUT. This code can set if you have bad plugs, wires or a bad alternator. RFI is a big contributor to A/C signal corruption. I doubt they still used a hall effect type sensor in 97, even if they did it can still be affected by RFI. Do a tune up if it needs it. Just disconnect the alternator or drop the belt, start the truck and run another self test before it overheats. I see alternators set this code in Fords all the time. (02 mustang GT anyone?)
Just keep in mind it may not necessarily be a bad sensor or a wiring problem. This input is only used for sequential fuel injection anyway so there should be no driveability symptom unless there are problems elsewhere.
