Default Why does everyone go with 331 over 347?

In almost every post that I have read, everyone picks the 331......I want a 347 but is there something that I am missing?

347s have a notorious reputation for oil consumption issues. The ring area is the main problem. There are a couple of companies that have released 347 blocks that have this problem resolved, but the fear is still there.
I personally would choose a 331 over the 347. Not necessarily because of the issues with 347s in the past, but just because I have always wanted one.

don't know about the sound difference. the earlier version of some 347's had the piston pin hole intruding on the lower oil ring groove which made them burn oil really bad, but the newer piston designs have fixed this by moving the pin up a bit. there is also a little issue with side loading on the piston skirts due to the longer stroke but this has been resolved too with most pistons designed specifically for a 347 stroker, so I would say if you want one, go for it.

Just from what I read in a MM&FF article called...331 ways to waste an LS1, they chose a 331 because, as roundman said, the 347 produces more sideloading in most kits which increases friction and wear in the cylinder. They claimed that due to this, the 331 would produce as much, or more hp then the 347's.

if you go 347 dont go cheap, a good set of 347 pistons with teflon coating on the skirts and with the wrist pin below the oil ring is going to run about 550-600 and i would only consider 3 manufactures trick flow, JE, and my faverite MAHLE.

Coast High Performance is responsible for the elimination of the oil consumption problem with 347's. They claim that their 347 strokers will last just as long as a 331 and all problems have been eliminated.. They still offer the 331 for people gunshy of the 347.

Both are gonna be pretty good, I think its just preference with the 331's. As for a 347, I would only go with Coast High for onea those kits.
