Default Rebuild or Crate?

Hello...the pic in my signature is my '93 Notch. I had it for 2 years now and it is dying for some "real" motor work. Since I had it, I have been focusing on the interior, stereo system...suspension and wheels. It is time for the horses!!

I have a decent budget, and I want to keep it emissions legal and Naturally Aspirated...but I am in turmoil on which avenue to take...crate or rebuild?

I figured I can go three ways...

(1) Dismantle my stock setup, Pick up a Piston kit (306 or 331...which one?) from DSS, bring it to the machine shop...have it balanced, cleaned up...and throw it back in the car. Trickflow makes that upper motor kit that includes heads/cam/intake...which is reasonably priced. Then just finish it up with a 70mm TB, 75 Mass Air, 24lb injectors, Bassani Shorties, X-Pipe w/cats, some new motor mounts...and an MSD ignition.

- I figure Best for money, but can I do that work not being so experienced?

(2) Buy that crate from DSS with the AFR heads...and then throw a Trickflow intake, with all the same extras: 70mm TB, 75 Mass Air, 24lb injectors, Bassani Shorties, X-Pipe w/cats, some new motor mounts...and an MSD ignition.

- Most Money (prob too much), but will be easier to work with.

(3) Or number three...go Cheap and leave the block alone. Just throw that Trick Flow upper kit with all the extras: 70mm TB, 75 Mass Air, 24lb injectors, Bassani Shorties, X-Pipe w/cats, some new motor mounts...and an MSD ignition.

- Cheapest Cost, probably have no problem with the install...but will my 108k stock block/pistons make it?

What do you guys think?? Any comments on which option to pick or the extras that I am looking to do would be greatly appreciated...

I'd go for number 3, There is a guy aroung here that put a turbo on his fox. He is running 11 second quarters with the stock bottom end. His motor has 140k on the clock.

Even if you eventually brake the motor. You can use all the accessories on the new one.

I got about 5k to throw into it...I am just concerned with the difficulty in the install...

Will the stock pistons be able to handle the Trickflow kit?

Check it out: http://www.latemodelrestoration.com/...1&comp=LRS

How about the extra's? Do you think everything else would work good with that application...bigger injectors? Wider TB? What do you think??

Stock Pistons with that Trickflow kit:

-70mm TB, 75mm Mass Air, 24lb injectors, Bassani Shorties, X-Pipe w/cats, some new motor mounts...and an MSD ignition.

I'd do a basic rebuild on the bottom end(ARP bolts, bearings, seals, balance [maybe], hone the cylinders, new rings etc.), AFR 165's, custom grind cam, and the intake of your choice. Plus all of the bolt ons (MAF, throttle body, full exhaust, underdrives, blah blah blah) you'll be looking at well over 300 horse. Just don't spend a lot of money on the bottom end. But that's just me.

Edit: If you're staying N/A for good, I'd also shell out the cash for some higher compression pistons. Remember, on top of all that, your either going to need a dyno tune to maximize your A/F or get a PMS, MegaSquirt, or similar.
