questions about a 5 speed
Sorry if this is in the wrong section but this is the only section i've ever really used.
hello all, i haven't been around mustang forums for quite awhile. i wrote my car off just after christmas and haven't had a car. i've been saving my money for a nice 5.0 but i found this 95 mustang that i'm gonna buy. It's not a 5.0 sadly but it's a v6 and that's all i need until i can afford gas and upgrades to make a fun 5.0.
It's got high milage but w/e. (heres the link to the add lol:http://www.canadatrader.com/result/d...no=1&srt=1)
Anyways, i have a question about manual transmissions. I'm only 17 and have only ever driven automatic vheciles. So this will be my first manual. I have a slight idea on how they work, i just need some kinda instructions on how to do it right. all i really know is that you have to use the clutch when you turn it on and release it slowly the first time then when your driving you can release the clutch a bit faster. I was reading a post that i made a while ago and they were talking about down shifting... i will be doing mostly city driving, so lots of stop and go traffic. When you hit a stop light do u have to shift down to first gear again right? also when braking do u have to use the clutch or something? i'm not really sure what else to if ask about, just if anyone could help me out with some tips and advice please :P
also sorry for the long post and such noobish topic thanks to everyone who replies.

RE: questions about a 5 speed
ok so when you take off you release the clutch and apply the gas at the same time (you'll figure out the right amount of eachas u drive it more)... you can leave it in gear and brake normaly unless u are coming to a stop then u have to push the clutch in or put the car in neutral, then when u take off again u have to start in 1st... when u shift from one gear to the next make sure u push the clutch in and then put it in gear and then release the clutch... be prepared to replace the clutch in about a month or so

oh and another thing i need to know is when to shift... i know in video games and stuff alot of them shift right before u start to redline but is that the same as real life? i think i might see if my grandpa has a manual around his farm somewhere that i can practice on lol.

hell just cruisine mine only sees 2000 unless i have to get out of some jackasses way
ORIGINAL: AdderMk2
you only shift at high rpms when racing. I usually shift no higher than 3k when driving around town... sometimes 2500

RE: questions about a 5 speed
don't get discouraged if you don't get taking off right away..it takes quite a bit of practice..did for me anyway and mine doesn't see higher than 2 grand either unless it has to

RE: questions about a 5 speed
yea it took me a week to learn how to take off decent and prolly 6 months to get to the point of calling myself a good driver... but my standards of driving are much higher that other, i only consider myself a slightly above average driver, but i am a good amount better than every one i know with the exception 3 or 4 ppl
