Default checking timing

my car has a horrible constant misfire and im wondering if it is the timing. last night i went to check timing.. warmed it up, pulled spout out, #1 cyl, etc and i shine the light down and there were4 white out lines all in the same area and i didnt know which was which so i got under the car to look closer and it looks like theres a timing mark range imprinted onto the pulley and he has highlighted 4 of the lines. i cant see numbers at any of the lines i just see tiny notches inbetween the white out lines. but i thought that there was supposed to be a divet thing on the pulley which is where you check the timing at... so i clicked the motor around and sure enough i foudn the divet so i marked it with white out and went back up to check timing again. i moved the timing gun from 0 degrees all the way to 85 degrees and i turned the dizzy around a bit each way and i could never find the divet.

i am new to mustangs so im not totally familiar with how to check timing on it. is the little imprinted scale correct or am i right about checking the divet? the car is an 88 with a 302.
