Default RE: 351/408 build... where to start

first.. take the heads off , if you want to save the bolts, go ahead, but i wouldnt reuse them, i would use studs.
take it all apart, down to the bare block.. but save all your bolts and if ya cant remember what bolt goes where, just put them up somewhere and mark, what they are.
next.. take your block too a good, recomended machine shop, and ask them what it will clean up too.. the bore, as in what kind of pistons too order.. .30 40 60 and so on... you will have too know this before you order a stroker kit, or any rebuild kit.
after the machinist tells you what kind of pistons you need , order your stroker kit..
theres all kinds of kits out there, ibeam rods, h beam rods, cast ,steel crank and so on.
some kits you buy, and the stroke, with i beams rods, no grinding is required on the block for clearance for the rod or rod bolts. but i think just about every kit you get with h beam rods, you have to do a little grinding, as far as i know?
depending on what kind of intake you buy, dont buy the wrong one.. know what deck height your block is.. someone on here might know from the year model motor or truck block ..but i cant remember right now.
if your not going to turn it over 6k i beams rods should be ok..and you might get away with no grinding on the block also. but if i had the money, i would go ahead and build it as strong as i could with a good steel crank and h beams. which requires minor grinding.
after you get your kit.. take it too a good machine shop and have them ballance EVERYTHING!!!!
if its a 5 speed, take your clutch, pressure plate, and fly wheel too, and dont use a factory clutch, buy a good one ....my machinist even ballances bolts and nuts.. it will matter , especially if you have solid mounts... but i think that is your starting point.. then the after market oil pan and headers, i recomend bbk headers..
