Transmission Problems
Whats up forum? Thought I would ask you guys what you would do. Bought an awesome 1993 LX 5.0 vert back in August. Perfect condition. The only bad thing is that it's an automatic. Was driving fine until about a month ago. Shifts to first and second fine, when it trys to shift to 3rd gear it won't shift, or catch, and sounds like it's in neutral. I think I might have lost 3rd gear in my pony. But i'm hoping I don't need a new tranny. Is there anything I should check or do to the tranny to see if that fixes the problem? Your help would be much appreciated, Thanks in advance, Matt

RE: Transmission Problems
sounds like you might have broken the inner shaft on the input shafts combo. in the AOD, the input shaft is hollow and the smaller inner shaft is splined to fit into the torque converter so you have full lock up in 3rd gear and overdrive for better gas mileage. the outer shaft drives 1st and 2nd gear only. unfortunately, this smaller shaft is prone to shearing into due to the smaller cross sectional diameter. do you get any engagement in 3rd or OD?? if not, my best guess is the shaft is gone and will need to be replaced/rebuilt.

RE: Transmission Problems
most AODs lose 3rd and 4th they are on the same band. youll lose OD first then 3rd will go after that youll only have 1,2 and r but you might get lucky and be able to shift into 3rd around 6k rpms. i bought a tranny that supposly was good but found out ti wasnt. it only shifted at 6k rpms and that is after the tranny was hot. the clutches on this are shot
