Its just stock out of a 88. How much do machine shops charge to check out the block and clean it?

88 did have forged piston they did not change till 93

If it starting to get rust you wanna have it cleaned up right and the price is depended on the shop and location. I can take something 100 miles away and get it done for about 1/2 price as local.

The 8?-92 5.0's had forged pistons which have a TRW part number. If it were me I'd take it apart and take it into a reputable shopto have the parts I was planning on reusing cleaned and magnaflux inspected. As for machine work, you could do a down and dirty rebuild by just honing it yourself. The quality of that depends on the condition of the cylinders and you skills with a hone. Me, personnally I would rather let a shop do it for 50.00 then wrisk doing it myself. If it has rust on the cylinders thier's a good chance it will need to be bored anyhow. My machinest charges the followin prices

Clean Block 50.00
Magnaflux inspect Block 25.00
If you get the the full treatment- Clean, Cam bearings and freeze plugs installed, and magnafluxed its 105.00
If it just need to be Honed 48.00
A Bore and Hone runs 125.00

These prices are pretty average so anywhere you go will be close
