cheapest thing to do is
just put it in neutral and then turn it on or just make sure you have ur clutch pressed in all the way
in the old cars there werent any clutch safety switches
if its in gear and u try to start it the flywheel will spin because of the starter and try to crank the engine and since its in gear your car will move a little but not turn on (not good)

While we're on the topic, I heard recently that the Neutral Safety Switch also retards timing between shifts. Is that true, or just more BS?
