5.0 to 5.8 swap?

My buddy has a 91 gt and I have a 351w out of my 85 f250 that we want to throw in his car. My questions are: Are the heads the same? Can the heads from the mustang go onto the 351? Will we need to get a new oil pan? He has an automatic tranny will it bolt right up to the 351? The 351 was hooked to a manual is that going to cause a problem and if so what parts will we need to get? Thanks for any help in advance.

I am a 4.6L guy myself so I know all there is to know about them but Im still learning what can swap over on the pushrod motors.

Stock 351W doesnt make much more hp, but has tons of potential.

Bellhousing bolt patterns and engine mount locations are same from 302 to 351W
Will need Ford Racing swap oil pan among other things.
do a search there are tons of artcls and threads on the parts need.

all in all its pretty easy swap with some common sense and a little research.

I got the search button to work for me. The only question I have left is would it be beneficial to swap the 91 mustang heads onto the 351w or or just keep the heads that are on the 351w?

stick with the 351 heads.

first off you would have to tap the heads to use a 1/2 inch bolt to install heads that flow less then the 351 heads.

you dont tap the heads.... you have the head bolt holes machined out to 1/2"

He wants to keep it carb. His is EFI and has a powerdyne supercharger on it right now but does not want the supercharger and is going to try to sell it.

What about all of the front bracketing what can I reuse? If he gets a non highrise intake would we still have to use the lowering motor mounts?

Thanks guys you are all a big help

Are the heads the same?
No.

Can the heads from the mustang go onto the 351?
Yes they can fit. Stock E7 heads are restrictive on a 302.. nevermind how bad they will be on a 351.
(in other words, its a bad idea)

Will we need to get a new oil pan?
Yes, you need a "351w Fox Swap Pan"

He has an automatic tranny will it bolt right up to the 351?
Yes it will. It would be smart for him to rebuild it first though.

As long as you take out the pilot bearing from the crackshaft, you will be fine. He will however need a 28oz imbalance flexplate.
