Bigger does not mean better. A tire that fits well will outperform a poor fitting tire.
Any of the 245's will fit well on the Pony rim. If you're going to put on a 255, look at the manufacturers specs to see if that tire will fit appropriately on that width rim. They don't come up with those figures without a reason.
