RE: z303 cam HAS ANYONE EVER HEARD ONE?
Did you have gears in it? I would imagine 4.10's would be best for that cam. Did you have it tuned? Sorry for all the ?'s....I am planning on a 351 for my car this summer but I am weighing the pros and cons of a built 302 and a built 351 still. I am going to run a carb so the surging wont be much of a problem. Its really too bad SN95's dont like big cams .

RE: z303 cam HAS ANYONE EVER HEARD ONE?
i had 3.73s in it. and i will tell you about the 351 coming up cause thats what i am putting in my notch. but i would honestly go with the 351. its a better platform to start with since u start off with more cubes than a stroked out 302 and the block is stronger. also a 351w is about 100lbs heavier than a 302 but swapping a tubular k-member and moving the battery to trunk offsets this weight.
about the big cam. i would have to let the car warm up for about 5min every time i drove it holding it at about 1500rpms to offset the surging issues. after doing that the car really didn't idle all that bad and that was untuned.
have thought about any of the components needed for the swap and what parts your going to run?

I was thinking of something similar to what R.Barn is running. 351 with forged pistons and some AFR185's or Edelbrock Performer RPMs. I wanna run a big nasty cam in it of course. And I wanna be able to get some RPM out of it, i hate it that the 5.0 peters out at 5 grand its lame. I dont know how the z cam would work in a 351, i am assuming it would be great since its a big cam in a big motor. I am also most likely going to use an edelbrock dual plane air gap sytle intake. I am also going to run a demon carb or an old school holley one but most likely a demon cuz i have heard nothing but how awsome they are. I wanna make about 425 horse with it, ( I know R.Barn made 475 with his setup.) I am aiming low and achieving high lol.

my cam i was shifting at 6 untuned and was going to shift at 65 after it was tuned. its not the 302 that falls on its face its the setup that you use. i was also pick other cams than the z get one custom made to your setup. i also liked the weind stealth intake. thats what i will more than likely use for my 351

Im not really sold on custom cams...theres not really a reason for 'em unless your running a setup thats weird i guess. I donno, i just think that all the manufactures of cams have tons and tons of options and theres no real reason for a custom cam. I may look into it though.

the price of a nice quality cam anymore than i have seen still runs close to 250 or more. so why not pay a little more and get one that is specifically made for your car? i wish i would have. i mean hell my cam was 279.99 plus shipping from summit. 10 bucks more i could have had one made just for my stroker motor

1. You make up a combo (H/ I/ Ex/ Valvetrain/ tranny / suspension / gears / etc)......then "guess" what valve events (OTS cam) is better ($$$$)....you install it, and don't obtain the power you're looking for......then you decide that you need to change the TB to "match the cam"...(as an example) ($$)....try it again and still short. Then decide to upgrade the injectors to "match the cam"....($$).....(step-n-repeat)...($$)($$)........OR....
2. You make up a combo (H/ I/ Ex/ Valvetrain/ tranny / suspension / gears / etc)......then fill out a buid sheet with your combo info and GOALS, and send it to a custom cam designer. he will evaluate your setup, discuss with you any areas that might be logical to upgrade (if that's the case)....tell you if your goals are achievable, then you ($$) pay, cam is designed, built and installed....and your goals are achieved.
Isn't #2 more economical......even though the "cam" is higher in cost, you also receive a "service" in the design of your combo.....however....your car, your dough, your call.....[sm=signs003.gif]

You make a solid argument. I am pretty sure you can call the tech line at comp or isky or where ever and they can help you out as well. I am not saying custom cams aren't good. I guess they are better really because you can say i want this idle speed, this type of idle, this rpm, etc..etc...I just want one that sounds nasty and revs to 6000 and gives me good amounts of mid to top end power. I guess i could just tell them that haha.
