Are you sure it is in the valvetrain? It could be a bearing in the power steering pump or alt or tensioner?

Find an old valve cover and cut the top off it so you can see what's going on inside. Run the car and make sure your getting oil up on the rockers. Have you been into the engine at all?

Why dont you take a screw driver and start listening to diffrent spots untill you can find it? Narrow it down by putting your screw driver on something and then putting your ear on it andyou can hear whats goin on in that spot. Great way to find bad injectors, worn valve trian parts, bad bearings on the accessorys...all kinds of stuff.

if a lifter is stuck a rocker arm should be sloppy when the cam lobe is down...... so try to find slop in rocker arms, turn the motor over a little bit, check again for sloppy rockers, etc etc until you've turned it over two complete turns. do it on each head to be sure..... if everything is tight i cant see it being a stuck lifter.

*edit* to eliminate the alt and ps pump just take off the belt and start 'er on up.

Hey guys,
Thanks for all the help.

Are you sure it is in the valvetrain? It could be a bearing in the power steering pump or alt or tensioner?
It had never occured to me that it could havebeen the power steering pump... the bulk of the noise wasbeing generated right in that region. I checked the fluid, and it was low. Added some, and the noise persisted. So I decided to jump the belt

*edit* to eliminate the alt and ps pump just take off the belt and start 'er on up.
beat ya to it earlier in the afternoon.
The sound was gone.
So it's definitely a major relief to find out I have a pump going out, rather than a crying motor.

So thanks again guys...

Your fluid being low, depending on if it was super low or not is probably why your pump failed. Just in case it was super low so you dont let it happen it again.

I had the same problem with my smog pump...don't you love it when you immediately assume catastrophe and it is something small? Definite relief...but what a waste of Time and Stress!?!?!?
