starter engaging too long?

starter engaging too long?
ok guys i just put a high torque starter in my car and its wired like the 92+ mustangs. i rewired it the correct way and all, if you try to wire it the wrong way, the solenoid will engage all the time so yeah. my question is, when you crank up the car, the starter will still spin after the motor is cranked up for about a second. ive heard that i need shims, how why would it being too far into the bell housing cause it to engage longer? Any help is appreciated guys. thanks in advavced

RE: starter engaging too long?
leave the wires on the starter alone and swap the big and the little wire around on the solenoid
my car did the same thing.. i think thats how i fixed mine.. it was staying engaged about a second too long
but my brain has been engaged too long today too, and aint working right!!!!!!!!!
its not the position of your starter, or shimmed.. all that is ok.. its in the wiring!!!!!!

i tried to wire it the other way when i first put it on, and i heard a click, which i thought was the solenoid on the starter engaging or am i wrong? ill try it out when i get to work later on today.
