Tranny questions
My Stang has been sitting for too long!!! I have been doing my homework and need some expert opinions.
I have been looking at the following trannys
1. Ford racing wold Class T-5. I understand that this is alittle stronger than a standard T-5. It has a 2.95 first gear ratio that I read is not good for an optimum launch. Is it true that you would have to run 4.10 gears in order to get the same launch as a standard T-5 with 3.73 gears? Is this T-5 reliable enough to spend $1350 on or should i move on to option 2
2. TREMEC 3550 3.27 low gear for a better launch. More reliable. Is it worth paying $500 more??
thanks!
JJ

RE: Tranny questions
You are asking the right person, I just bought and installed brand new t-5Z for 1350. Now I love my tranny and it is awesome but if i could do it all over i would have gotten the tko600 with 2.87 first gear. heres why the rating of my t-5 is good for now but if you have the tko you can do whatever. plus when i started this project i was reusing my clutch and shifter. But I wound up buying another new clutch and mgw shifter. If you have the extra dough go for the tko if not the z is great. but for the gearing i didn't notice too much from the 3.35 to the 2.95, maybe 5 mph in first, plus 5th is lower so you tach less on the highway. works great with 3.73 even better with 4.10. also has to do with how good you can drive a stick as the t-5 can't take too much grinding as the tko is more tolerable with its syncros

RE: Tranny questions
what he said was mostly true, and yes 4.10's with the 2.95 is the same (or close enough to it) as the 3.35 with 3.73's, if you do the math the 2.95 with 4.10's os 2 mph higher than the 3.35 with 3.73's... but the t5z isn't realy anystronger, it just has less torque in it with the longer gearing making it capable of holding a little more power from the motor, but the alloy used on those gears is more prone to cracking...in my eyes it's not worth it just because i have seen more stock t5's hold more power than the t5z does
