Default adjustable FPR going bad???

How can you tell if a FPR is going bad? After replacing my stock fuel pump with a high flow we went to adjust the FPR. We set it at 42psi and after driving it around the block, it just didn't feel right. We checked it when I got back and the pressure had dropped to around ~35psi. We turned it up to 45psi and I drive home. I get home and check it and it had dropped again. All adjustments were made with the vacum hose disconnected... I'm not sure what brand it is, I got it when I bought my used holley intake. Do these things go bad? I know they're not expensive, just seeing if anyone has ever come across this. This is my first stang and I'm still learning.
