Default A couple timing questions

I've been doing a lot of research on timing and i still have just a couple questions. I read through the search results and did not find answers.
1. Is the distributor hold down bolt the one bolt facing the front of the car that is at the bottom of the dizzywhere it attaches to the manifold?
2. Which wire am i supposed to unplug before adjusting the timing. My car is carbureted and all of the pictures i've seen have been efi. Are they the same?
3. Is 14 degrees an ok spot to start or should i start at 12 or even 10 (stock). I set my mark at 14 and it is a good inch away from the timing pointer. Is that normal?

Thanks for any input that you might have. I'd like to get this done soon.
