86 GT Build-up

RE: 86 GT Build-up
Chitown, thanks for your concern about all this. I understand why you're still skeptical... so was I before I really started checking into this combo. This might help to explain it better. I went to www.trickflow.com yesterday and they have a phone # at the top of the page to call for tech questions. Me and the guy had a LONG talk about this kit. He explained why '86 flat top pistons without reliefs are recommended with the "track heat" or "street heat" kit. He said the reliefs are not needed because the cam is only .499 intake/.510 exhaust with 1.6 rockers and as long as you stay under that on a 302 with pistons that don't protrude above the deck of the block, you'll be fine. He said the heads are called "twisted wedge" because the valves are angled upward 15 degrees to a more upright position which allows them to use bigger diameter valves for maximum flowand not much cam lift. Because of the new valve angle, pistons with reliefs cut into them, have them in the wrongplace on the face of the pistonto do any good (even if they were needed). He said, "We designed these heads to work with flat top pistonsWITH or WITHOUTreliefsand have no piston to valve contact. The reason flat topsWITHOUT cuts are ideal, is because it raises compression and gives the advertised HP rating of 350. With cut pistons, he said it would be more like 335 HP". He said, "We came up with these heads so everyone could use them... even you '86 302 guys since your selection of heads for true flat tops is so limited". He couldn't have done a better job of convicing me this combo will work... but I'm still gonna "clay" it up for 100% peace of mind.
