I have a 1986 Mustang GT and was looking for some oppinions on the best way to get >400 rwhp. I am looking for the best bang for the buck. My budget is $4200.00. The car is stock with shorty headers and a flow-master exhaust. what do you think?

I'm in the same boat as you. I have an '86 Capri I'm building up right now... my budget is considerably higher that yours though, so you might not be able to accomplish 400 hp unless you're willing to spend a little more. This is how I'm building mine. Converting to mass air, tearing down the stock block, hot tanking it, re-using the block/crank/pistons/rods, intalling the Trick Flow track heat kit, 70mm TB, 75mm MA, EGR delete, 30lb injectors, 255 fuel pump, A/C and smog pump delete, underdrive pulleys, C&L air tube, MSD distributor & ignition, a ZEX wet 125 hp shot and a dyno tune. This combo should be good for 350hp N/A and 475 hp on the bottle. HopeI gave you some goodideas for your build.

I called the Trick Flow tech line and asked about piston to valve clearance issues andthey said flat tops are recommended with the upper end kit they sell. I'm still going to clay it up on one cylinder to check for myselfonce I get all the parts, but they insist that it'll be OK. I'll let everyone here know for sure.

Well, yes they recommend flat tops, but I'm sure what they mean by flat tops are ones that have valve reliefs. As yours is the only year that came "without" them, I would almost bet your going torun into problems, buthey I've been wrong before.
