Default Putting distributor pack in TDC!

Ok guys I have not worked on an older engine in a long time i work on the 2v's. One of my buddies is working on his car 90' fox with a carbed 5.0 ho in it. He took the distributor out and went to put it back in and it will not line up with #1 on the cap what so ever. I set the balancer on 0 degrees and it's set on top dead center and when we go to put back in the dist. it will only go in at about 1oclock to 1:30. How would i get it to go in at #1 b/c it won't go in before 12 at like 11oclock or anything either. If someone could give me a step by step process of setting al this up i would greatly appreciate it.

I assume it won't go in all the way at 11 or 12 o'clock? if that's what you mean you can rotate the oil pump shaft a little so it will sit down right. i don't remember the exact size but i think it's 5/16 socket fits on the end of the pump shaft. use an extension to get down there. i would tape the socket to the extension just to make sure you don't drop it down inside the motor.

Yeah that's what i mean it won't go down on 11 or 12 and we already tried to turn the pump shaft, so i don't know what to do.

No nothing was dropped down in there. I guess i'm going to leave it at 1oclock and change the wires.

Pump shaft is 1/4". You're at TDC on the compression stroke, right? Not gonna help your distribtor problem, but it'll save you from a nasty backfire on startup

thanks for the correction on the size LT [8D]

if you can get it to set down at 1 o'clock no problem the only thing i can think of that it would be is the pump shaft not lined up. unless there is damage to the distributor gear..... otherwise it's got to be the shaft not lining up right.
