if you're gonna shift an auto like a manual, you might as well drop a manual in it..

I think Mustangfxbody has it right from what I have heard, but I haven't done it myself, always had manuals until my current project. Hopefully someone else will chime in.

Hey bone-head, like I wrote at the beginning, I already have two 5 speed Capri's and I want to go with an auto on this one because it can handle more power and will run more consistent 1/4 miles than a stick. With the 475 HP motor I'm putting in this car, the last thing I want to do is put it in drive and let it shift on it's own at 4500 RPM and run a 20 sec. 1/4 mile! So, YES, I'm gonna shift it. I just want to know why the AOD is the only auto that I've ever heardof that has to be shifted in such "wacky" way to get it to hold second gear to redline?

The 1-D-1 shuffle is a killer for the AOD transmissions. If you are wanting to manually shift your AOD (whether it be to hold to a certain RPM, or just because you want to) I suggest you get a manual valvebody for your transmission. LenTech offerssome with an elecric overdrive delete. Check this link out. http://www.lentechautomatics.com/aodproducts.html

There is no safe way to hold shifts with a stock AOD. Buy a manual valve body and you can hold shifts til whenever you want, or buy a shift kit and you can set shift points whereever you want.

you can hold the shifts put it in till you wanna shift to 2nd,then bump the shifter into drive, after your trans shifts into 2nd, pull the shifter back to the 1 position, when you reach the rpm's you wish to shift into 3rd you bump the shifter back into drive........................when you are downshifting you drop to the 1 position the trans will downshift to 2nd and stay untl vehicle speed is slow enough to go into 1st, then it will do so on it's own .
