hard to see detail, but it looks like they are just dirty with carbon, which is normal. am i missing something?

Well my buddy is the one who took my heads of lastnight and thos pistons just didnt look right to me. I think it's carbon build up
Yes I have been running an air filter

well the heads are invisible which is pretty cool
the pistons, go to the parts store and get a can of carbon deposit remover spray. I used a can of oven cleaner on mine and a wet/dry vac the next day- they sparkled.

i still think that is more than just carbon build up i have never seen build up like that before but you never know

look like nuttin but carbon to me, flakey kinda, like some sort of engine cleaner was used or something - but they dont look hurt
