changing motor mounts

i am going to put some polyurethane motor mounts on my 88 but how is the best way to raise the motor without taking off the upper plenim and using a lifting plate?

I've un bolted the motor mounts and then jack the car up by the harmonic balancer, use a wooden block and jack it up slowly. Dont push on the lower pully,

I put a 2x4 on edge between the balancer and the front of the oil pan and jacked it up here, don't like the idea of jacking on the crankshaft via the balancer. you can also use a thick piece of plywood directly under the oil pan too but make sure it's at least 3/4" thick to spread out the load and not dent the pan. it doens't hurt to also loosen the tranny mount but don't forget to go back and tighten it down after the new motor mounts are in.

The only thing thing about using the oil pan is the small chance that you can squeeze out the gasket with too much pressure from lifting. But like roundman said you can do it that way just becareful

yep i just changed my motor mounts a few days ago and that is how i did it now the engine sits really nice and i dont have to worry about it torquein to the drivers side.

how long did it take you guys?

well, i have done it on my dakota. the mounts were split in half, so when i accelerated the tranny flopped over to the side. it was kinda tough bein a 5-speed. the project didnt take long, only about an hour max. take off the pin-type bolt first, then jack the engine up higher, and then take it off of the block. you prolly wont be able to get to some of the bolts on the block unless you do it that way (or at least that is how it was on the dakota).

RE: changing motor mounts

well for mine it was that the one on the passenger side was ripped in half and the drivers side was squeezed to the max. (Because of the way the engine torques) But it did not take that long. But how bad are the ones that are on there now? Because when i did mine i went threw alittle bit of bastardness to get the engine to fully align with the new engine mounts. So i had to lift the engine one way more then the other then i got both of them to fall in place. The one that was a bastard for me for alittle while was the one on the drivers side. So dont be surprised if you dont have to do alittle more work then you think to get those mounts in. Other then that they should not take you more then 30min to an Hour max. Good luck and if you have any other questions dont be affraid to ask.

PS: If the mounts dont want to allign then just get a rubber mallot or a hammer and a piece of thick wood to soften the blow. Other then that you should be fine.

Nick
