please help me!!!

hey im new here and i just bought a 90 gt 5spd for $5grand. it has an aftermarket shifter, flowmaster mufflers, bbk cold air induction and the engine has been rebuilt. I have no idea how many miles are on this engine but im having a few problems. whenever i start it up it is very hard to crank over but after about 5 seconds in starts up fine. i idles a bit high, around 12 to 1,300 rpm when it is first started. then the real problem. whenever im driving and i shift the rpms skyrocket. recently it has gone as far as 4,000 rpm!!! it will also do this in neutral when coasting. also when im in gear and i get it up to speed it seems to pull me right along without even hitting the gas. sometimes i even have to ride the brake.ive already flushed the radiator andchanged the oil and let me tell u it needed it. i think it has a very small oil leek. might just b a gasket but i haveyet to find out. also im looking for a reasonably priced obdscan tool formy car.im in the process of doing a tune up on it so i may come across more problems. if anyone has any info or suggestions please let me know. thanx a ton!!!

Autozone has cheap scan tool. Sounds like you may need a new throttle cable. Are you up that high in the RPMs before shifting or does it jump that high when you push in the clutch? I was thinking that the throttle may be sticking and staying that high.

check the throttle body, you might need to back the idle screw out if the last owner messed with it

My suggestion would be to take that car and ram it into the house of the guy who sold it to you for selling you an overpriced lemon. Other than that, break out the wallet and get ready for brokedom.

set your idle and calibrate your tps accordingly and check the mass airflow sensor for cleanliness and connection problems. also make sure the throttle body is clean, the blade may be sticking open.

I have a 87 5.0 and my car tends to idle a bit high, especially when its cold. itfluctuates a bit too. ive been told to try to adjust the idle control valve, or it could be just bad alltogether. anyway if your car revs out like that i think it could be the valve. you can also take it off and clean it out with carb/choke cleaner.

My car was acting the same way when the IAC failed. I tried to clean it, but ended up replacing it. Problem solved. But I would try to clean yours first, and if it makes a difference and, and then starts acting up again. Go to Napa and spend the 50 bucks to get youa new one.
