Getting a 5.0 Mustang into the 12 is easy. I know a guy who did nothing to his '89 LX coupe but make the damn thing hook. Hoosier Drag slicks, a built C4, and a built suspension. That's all you need. I saw him doing 12.72 passes like it was nothing. The only things non-stock about the engine that I could see was it had a electrical radiator fan, and no accessories, except for the alternator.
