86' 1/2 Oil burning and tranny leaking
Heya fellas. Just registered for the boards, and I was wondering if some of the techies could answer me some questions so I have a general idea of where to concentrate my first tests.
First question is : I was moving my Stang to park it for the winter (never got to drive it because I had a baby on the way, and I didn't get to cert it) and i noticed that there was a nice 20 foot long twin trail of tranny fluid. Are the AODs prone to tranny coolant lines, or oil pan seal leaks? Or am I gunna hafta just pour some oil in and hope I pinpoint the spot?
Second thing is : I a piston ring (that darn cyl 5) and I'm going to try the ol' mask it with lucas oil trick until I get the cash to drop something new in, but is it possible to pull some pistons out without taking the engine out, or is there too much blocking the bottom end? I had to leave the car at my parent's place over the winter, so I'm not free to take a look whenever I can
Thanks in advance!

for the first question, clean off any oil on the tranny and floor, put a piece of cardboard underneath and watch where exactly it drips from
for the 2nd one, you COULD try to take'em out with the block inplace, but trust me EVERYTHING will go ALOT smoother with the engine out, its actually super easy to work on these cars, even pulling out the engine

Yeah, I agree with 86 5.0L, spot the leak as he mentions. Never had a problem with the oil pan gaskets only with the valve covers leaking. Pull the motor, your better off. Good Luck.....

Thanks guys! My next question then is : easier to pull the engine out with the tranny on it to do both at once? Or easier to pull the engine out, leave the tranny in, and do the tests seperately?
And as for the pictures, the car is not in any viewing condition yet The header corners for the t-top are rusted out...I've got a rough JB job going on there until I can find a new roof for a decent price. And since there are none in Canada in goo shape it seems, that means saving up!
But, I do have some quick shots of the front of my other 86' (first half)Trunk I was rebuilding till and converting into an 8, and the rally rims I got with it. I had to scrap the car because with a baby on the way it would have been too expensive to convert it. So I got the t-top
Anyways, here are some quick shots. Nothing fancy, but here goes.

nice paint job[8D] another member frdmstng1986 (or something like that) I think was painting it sonic blue too
for the engine question, if you have the right tools I say pull it out togerther, when I did it I went with it together, in a couple of hours I had it out.

RE: 86' 1/2 Oil burning and tranny leaking
lol, yeah, just in case I wasn't clear. That was an old car with a 2.3L that had a hole in the block that I was converting into an 8 cylinder which I had to scrap when I found out I was having a baby.
Ok, so pulling out the engine is a must...Before I do that though should I clean off the engine and run it for a lil bit like that? I have a quart of tranny fluid in there cause I was hoping it would have been a stuck piston ring problem, so I'm wondering if that would show leaks better than regular oil, or should I just put regular 20-50 or some in it and see if it masks the burning problem till I get the resources to pull the engine and rebuild it?
