Taking off the hood is almost a must. Makes life MUCH easier, and it's really easy to do.

The most important thing I can tell you about pulling the engine out is this. Are you reading? Good.

MARK ALL YOUR CONNECTIONS! Take pictures, draw pictorals, use tape to mark where each wire goes.As in 1 piece of tape on the harness, the other on the connection piece on the engine, both with the same mark. You do NOT want to have to go through the "Guess where this goes" game with a harness. Do this with vacuum hoses and everything else.

And don't forget to unbolt the exhaust :P Should be good to go if you unbolt them at the block.
And watch the tranny carefully when pulling the engine out. You don't want to drop any torques or something like that :P

As for the time it takes, I had to take my sweet **** time over the winter, so I couldn't really tell you if you'd work real hard for a day. But as a novice, making sure you mark everything off correctly, and with room for error and backtracking, I'd say a weekend definatelyshould be good to get everything taken out properly.

I can do it in about 2.5 hours on a 5.0 Fox, if all goes well. All the harness plugs are different so you really can't mix them up. For your first one I would set aside a weekend

Yeah, so if it's your first time, plan it for a weekend :P It's definately not like a VW engine either. And also, I just remembered something a buddy of mine did with his Jeep. He thought everything was disconnected and so decided to try to yank it all out one shot...And tore out some fuel lines :P
Try to limit the amount of beers along the way too : makes the last bit much easier :P
