My Electrical System is Disintegrating !
I dont know what the hell is going on.
Been having an ignition problem for last couple of weeks
Runs fine for 20-30mins then just dies like you turned it off.
will crank but not fire off, wait 30mins will start right up.
Did that again today.
While waiting with engine off and key on, the tach would jump 300-400 rpm
and show a voltage drop at same time every now and then.
Tach has done other weird things that the engine was not doing lately also.
Came back 1 hr later and it started right up, but
showing no charge from alternator. hmmm.
Only 1/2 mile to home so just nurse it back,
Get about 5 blocks and
SMOKE POURING OUT OF COWL! YIKES.
pull over and the alternator itself is smoking like a bar-b-q pit. WTF!!!!
brand new alternator.
Take the belt off and unplug the alternator and nurse it home the last
5 blocks.
Anyone have a clue?????

what kind of alt? any wires touching headers anywhere? it almostsounds like you had a cross short from youre alt to youre dizzy or ignition box( hence the tach jumping with the key off ) and it is feeding back into the alt and burnt it up. just a guess though.

already tried swapping TFI modules out.......
I have an inline 150amp fuse between alternator and starter soleniod too.
everything is maticulously grounded and covered and run with proper
fine strand 4g cable. First class 200amp alternator and alternator swap install
No problems with that for thouands of miles

pro's right, could be a bad diode trio in the alternator.
also, r.barn, have you tried tracing the harness from the tfi module plug and the alternator harness too and see if they come together and cross somewhere?
