HI, NEW MEMBER, NEW 5.0, electrical issue
Hey whats goin on. I recently picked up an 88 notch 5.0. I'm good friends with ckyguy68. I run neck and neck with him whenever we cruise.
However...This morning I went to start my car as usual (with the exception of the unusual weather) and nothing. So i shook around the positive and negative cables on the battery and it started up fine was able to make it to work. On my way outta work, same problem, but not the same solution. The battery ended up dying and when i was gettin a jump. the alternator started to smoke.
Common problem? I'm assuming a messed up regulator, but i don't want to buy a new alternator and find the same problem occuring. Any ides on what the problem is?
Thanks
-Andy

I'm going to assume you still have the stock alternator with the stock plugs going to it... If you do, what condition are your plugs in? Those were common problems in the foxes and have in some cases, caused engine fires. The smoking you talk of reminds me of this. You have two options if the plugs were to be bad.
Buy the replacement plugs and get rid of the old ones. The main plug you can get for $7 at Autozone. The regulator plug you will have to order from mustangsunlimited.com or somewhere similar. Local stores dont carry them.
Convert over to a post style alternator and get rid of the plugs altogether. (I'd recommend this one. simple to do.)
