engine oil
this is going to be pretty n00b for me to ask this but since this is my first 5.0 i thought i should ask. its about engine oil. my car has 200 000 km on it, is it ok to run synthetic or should i just put regular oil in. i herd that if i put synthetic in i could get leaks through the seals. what kind of oil should i run. i need to know the viscosity and also whats a good oil to use. thanks

RE: engine oil
Well the deal with synthetic is it has a high detergent content and if you do have leaks witch would be pluged with dino oil/crap it will clean it out. Syn is not bad to switch to you can do it at any mileage but if you do get leaks its cause it did what it was spose to do. Clean the system. See your oil cleans your motor to a point and your filter catches what it cleans. Same with dino or syn. But i will tell you a old redneck trick pour about 1/3 bottle of brake fluid in your oil if you have leaks and it will swell up your rubber seals. ( IT WILL NOT HURT YOUR MOTOR) But just a cheap fix till you can get seals replaced. (My lil brother has a 94 transam lt1and switched to syn it had 130k miles well long storie short it leaked like hell we put 1/3 bottle of brake fluid in his oil took about a week to stop leaking completely and its been perfect for 6 monthes now.) Everyone here should know that old trick so I say switch cause its better oil if you do get a leak through some brake fluid in it if you cant repair right away. Rember brake fluid is only a temp fix seals should be replaced as soon as you can IF you get a leak. hope this helps. Ohh btw i have 82k on my truck andstarted sysn @ 75k no problems at all. My stang i just switched to sys 168k miles no new leaks just the drivers valve cover witch has been leaking foever lol.

RE: engine oil
don't believe the hype
absolutely use synthetic , i like 15w50 , some say no, but the heavier oil helps w/ the looser motor
i also have 120k on mine
if your worried use 10w30 , but full synthetic, don't waste your money on blends.
the mpg , and increased interval pays for itself, virtually no engine wear is just a bonus
