Just had 3.73s installed and need to get my speedo back in line. I have a '91 T5 so it should have the 8T drive gear. How hard is it to change to a7T? I have heard it is a 10 minute job and I have heard it is a major PITA. Which is it?

if you have 3.73's you need a 23 tooth speedo gear....


its not hard. the biggest PITA is getting under the car.

I am going with a 21T driven gear and a 7T drive gear. I hear the 23T dont last long. I am curious how hard it is to replace the drive gear in the trans.

the speedo gear in the side of the trannys easy

the drive gear on the other hand i'm not sure about, i didnt touch mine.

For the drive gear, you have to take the DS off, then remove the tailshaft housing on the tranny, assuming it's still in the car. It's not a extremely hard process, but it's not as easy as just a speedo driven gear swap.

EDIT: Don't forget to drain the tranny fluid 1st

For the people not paying attention, but posting....He is talking about the drive gear on the output shaft, not the driven gear on the VSS....
