Here are two pics I just took (using a $1 bill for size comparison.)

its a disc that blows if the pressure inside the tank exceeds a certain amount. its basically a safety feature on the side of the valve so the disk bursts intead of the bottle, cuz that would b kinda bad

The burst disc. Basically it's a safety device. As you probably know, nitrous (and nearly everything else for that matter) expands as it is heated. As it expands in a closed in space (i.e. the bottle) it increases pressure because it has nowhere else to go. Once it reaches a certain point, it can go "boom" and blow up your bottle. As you can imagine, that would be BAD.

So as a safety measure, they install something called a burst disc. Basically, it's a disc that is designed to fail at a certain PSI. Just to use arbitrary numbers, lets say that a nitrous tank would blow up from pressure at 5000 PSI. So you install a burst disc near the valve. That disc would be designed to break at 3000 PSI. Obviously, you don't want nitrous pressure above 1100 PSI or so anyway. But if you don't notice it getting high and you can't manually release pressure, the burst disc would rupture at 3000 PSI.

When it ruptures, the contents of the bottle escapes past the disc and the bottle gets emptied. Of course, it sucks. But it's a lot safer than actualyl having the bottle explode. A controlled leak beats an uncontrolled one anyway.

If you have it setup the right way, the contents will empty down a "blowdown tube" and will exit the car and vent into teh atmosphere. If you're a fool, then the disc just ruptures and the passenger compartment fills with N2O (like black sheep)... road....roooaddddd.

So how is it comming using that O2 you were workin' on?
I can't seem to find a safe way to use nitrox... Can't seem to find a way to get a fitting that would fit over the tank's yoke and then connect to a nitrous solenoid. Still haven't completely given up though

actually you wouldt get all loopey if the nitrous leaked into the car unless it was medical grade. they mix somthin into the nitrous that we use in our cars so that if there was a leak we would definately notice it before we got all messed up. usually you end up puking if you try to inhale this stuff. just a lil FYI for ya guys

Why did a 15 lb bottle blow at only 8 or 9 lbs? Shouldn't you be able to put 14 lb in it and not worry?

i dont think it was a matter of how many lbs of nitrous was in the bottle, it was the pressure that was in the bottle. make sense?

do they make a pressure relief valve, not the safety disc, that could let some pressure out and then you could save most of the nitrous. just a thought, I am also a nitrous idot.
