another nipple question!!

another nipple question!!
just put my bbk 255 pump in today
on the return line there is a orange nipple
I slid it up to get it out of the way and it ripped it was held on by a lil clamp
so I just took it off......
question:
Do i need to replace it or will it be okay if i just leave it off and what the heck does it do anyway??
