If you never have painted a car before and you want it to look then you are asking for trouble.

you most likely had too much base. what ratios did you mix at? i've never painted a car but i've paint alot of other stuff before with the same principles and same types of guns n such. im sure i might have some insight on this, plus i use to work in a paint store and we sold car paint so i got a pretty good idea

it was 1:1 mix ratio. half paint and then half basemaker

laying down smooth paint is an art that takes YEARS of practice
and knowing how to operate the gun

If you are using a single stage paint follow the mix ratios on the side of the can. If you are using a base/ clear system, you don not mix the base with the clear. You spray the basecoat on then after that drys you wet sand and then you apply the clear coat on top of that.
