Default Cheap Paint

I'm about to sand down and repaint my 88lx since the grey paint is awful, I was wondering if you guys had any tips? I'm not going for great quality, just something decent. I have a 7" sander that I will use to sand down the old paint, use some rust remover to get rid of some of the small rust spots, and then primer it up and paint it black. As long as the paint looks decent for 2 years I will be happy. Does this sound possible or am I out of my mind and the perfect candidate for a $300 macco job?

It all depends on what you want! You can probably buy the paint for $50 gal. reducer $15, activator $25, primer $30. That is cheap paint and single stage. Base/clear systems are more expensive because you have to get the clear extra.Getting better paint will give you a better lasting quality than the cheaper paint. But if you are not familiar with painting it is less painful to mess up a low costing job than an expensive one. If you have the equipment, then go for it! It's not real tough!

funny
but seriously,... if you have never painted a car before or done anykind of body work i wouldnt even start sanding on it. and you said you where going to paint it black?
even for an experienced paint and body man they hate to hear someone say.."I WANT IT PAINTED BLACK" because black will show all the dents and flaws.
but like you said, if you just want it too look halfway decent for a couple years, just take it too a butcher paint and body shop, but dont keep it out in the sun, because they use chitty paint and it will fade out quick.
A decent paint job nowadays is anywhere from 2500 to 3500 dollars.
a good paint job is even more than that.
but if i was you i wouldnt even start sanding on it, just take it too a cheap paint place and letem fog it over, but keep it out of the sun

There's some Urethane Base/clear paint on Ebay for $230 shipped to your door. It comes in a kit with a gallon of base and clear. Also comes with reducer and hardner. You can get a Urethane primer in a kit from them for $115 shipped also. I can't remember his name but he is out of California somewhere. $350 Base/Clear job would look alot better than a rattle can and will last alot longer.
